The Tapir’s Trail

Walk the Path of Giants through Costa Rica’s Wildest Forest

What To Expect

The name "Trillo de la Danta" (Tapir’s Trail) comes from the wide, winding forest paths created by generations of Baird’s tapirs, one of Costa Rica’s most elusive and iconic mammals. These natural trails are now respectfully used by local guides Michael and Gustavo to bring visitors into close contact with nature—without disturbing the ecosystem.

This immersive half-day tour offers a rare chance to track wildlife in one of the most pristine regions near Drake Bay. You’ll explore Los Planes, a lesser-known area rich in biodiversity, medicinal plants, and crystal-clear rivers. With expert guidance, this is a journey of wildlife tracking, cultural learning, and sensory discovery.

Tour Description

You’ll begin with a hotel pick-up in Drake Bay followed by a scenic drive to a private reserve in Los Planes. During the transfer, keep your eyes open for toucans, hawks, and turquoise cotingas flying through the treetops.

Upon arrival, the experience starts with a visit to a beautifully cultivated medicinal plant garden, where your guide will explain how local communities use native flora for traditional healing.

Then, embark on a guided hike through untouched primary rainforest, following authentic tapir trails. With a bit of luck and sharp eyes, you might spot a Baird’s tapir, monkeys, or colorful tropical birds.

The tour concludes with a relaxing stop at an emerald river, perfect for a cool dip before returning to town.
